Three Rings Acquired by SEGA

17 November 2011

From the desk of Daniel James, CEO of Three Rings, aka Capn Cleaver:

I am delighted to announce that Three Rings has been acquired by SEGA Holdings U.S.A. Inc., a division of the SEGA / Sammy Corporation of Japan. You can read the press release here.

Today brings to a close a ten year journey as an independent developer, and opens a new chapter for the studio as a part of the SEGA family. As many of you know, SEGA and Three Rings partnered to launch Spiral Knights, building a deep trust and mutual respect over the past year.

SEGA and Three Rings are committed to our existing games: no change in service or development is currently planned to any of our titles, including Puzzle Pirates and Spiral Knights. Again, for the benefit of our players who may be concerned, we do not foresee any untoward changes to your player experience.

SEGA is also excited to be collaborating with us and the BBC to bring Doctor Who: Worlds in Time to completion. In particular, SEGA has a very strong presence in the UK, and many SEGA folks there are great fans of the show.

Three Rings will continue to operate as a self-contained development studio inside the SEGA family and will continue to be managed by myself and my colleague Tom Schofield. Our talented crew are excited to be joining SEGA; we all foresee years of great collaborations ahead. Again, no changes to our current development plans have been made, and we of course hope to announce more exciting projects in the future in partnership with SEGA.

I'm tremendously proud of the games we've made over the last ten years. It's not easy to make online games, especially genuinely new ones, and they are complex many-tentacled beasts. Moreover there have been turbulent times in the games industry and overall economy during the last decade. Our loyal team and investors, particularly our board members Jon Callaghan of True Ventures and Bob Zipp of Amicus, have navigated those choppy waters with us, and I'm very thankful to them.

Today's events secure our ability to keep doing what we love; making games and bringing them to life.

Lastly, I am extraordinarily grateful to all our customers over the years who have supported the vision of the company by enjoying our games. Thank you. I hope you will continue to sail with our crew and fleet under a new flag for many years to come.

Yours,

Daniel James, aka Capn Cleaver of Three Rings
